This describes the current configuration of the PC/Linux System.

  • Central server, thsrv.lbl.gov.

Pentium III (1 GHZ) system, 512 MB RAM, 200GB disk. This is the only group computer that accepts email from outside the lab, but usage of it as a personal email address is discouraged. Users should be using the Lab's IMAP service . All group members have accounts on this server, but direct logins are rarely necessary. If users wish to access the cluster from off-site, they are encouraged to ssh directly to their own workstations.

  • Math servers, thmath.lbl.gov, thmath2.lbl.gov, thmath3.lbl.gov.

Dual processor Xeons, 1 GB RAM, large hard disk. Mathematica and maple reside on these machines. In addition, cpu intensive batch jobs should be run here. All group members have accounts on these computers.

  • Public workstations, thpub1-4.lbl.gov.

Located in various locations. All group members have accounts on these computers.

  • Individual workstations, thwk1.lbl.gov-thwk36.lbl.gov.

Various types, from Pentium II 400MHz to PentiumIV 3GHz. 64MB - 1GB RAM Various disk sizes (df to see). Most workstations have CD burners. Most have sound, but may or may not have speakers installed. If you have need of sound and it is not enabled, ask management. All system files held locally. /home mounted via NFS from a server. No backups of local files (scratch space only). Use of these machines should be restricted to the residents of the room where they are located unless you have permission to "borrow" another user's CPU cycles or disk space.

  • Home server.

No logins allowed. Home directories reside here. This is the only machine that is backed up.

  • Scratch Space

All workstations have a local scratch area, named /scratch-local. In addition there are two global scratch areas, visible from all workstations. /scratch is for frequently accessed working files. /archive is for storing large files which will NOT be accessed on a regular basis. None of the scratch areas are backed up.

  • Macs
There is limited in-group support for Macs. Users act as their own system administrators and must be competent to do so. Significant support requests require a call to the help desk (x4357). 

  • Printing.

Double sided printers (lpr -Ptheory2) in 50A 5101 and theory3 in 50 5056. Single sided printer theory1 in 50a 5104. Color printer (lpr -Pthcolor) in 50a-5101a. This printer can print transparencies. Use ONLY HP brand transparencies. Other brands of transparencies may melt and damage the prints.

  • Offsite access
Anyone who has an ISP (internet service provider) at home can connect directly via the internet into the central server or the workstation in their office. This must be by ssh.
